Home Maintenance Basics

Home Improvement

When buying a home, it’s important to remember the time and labor that home ownership requires. Keeping up with regular home maintenance tasks will keep you from future headaches and wasted money.

If you are a first-time home buyer, you may not realize all the different components that make your house tick. What needs cleaned and serviced annually vs. what doesn’t. It can be overwhelming and if gone untouched, the damages can be costly.  Like putting oil in your car to keep your engine happy, you must keep up with maintenance to keep your house in working order!

It’s always a good idea to come up with a calendar of what projects to tackle and when. Categorize your tasks into monthly home improvements and seasonal home improvements. Most of the maintenance can be done yourself but when it’s time to call the professionals make sure to do your research and use someone you can trust!

Below is a list of a few common home maintenance tasks to keep in mind this spring season!

  • Change the air-conditioner filter and consider having it serviced
  • Inspect your roof for damaged shingles and leaks
  • Inspect window screens
  • Replace the batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Clean gutters and check exterior drainage
  • Clean out window wells of debris
